PASTOR JOHN

Pastor John Burk
Our Pastor is Dr. John K. Burk. Pastor John, as we affectionately call him, is easy going, easy to talk to, and has a conversational preaching style. He rarely uses the pulpit; instead he comes into the nave and explains the ancient texts from the bible and makes them come alive with 21st century examples.

His classic Lutheran sermons are always a combination of ‘law and gospel.’ The ‘law’ reveals our sinful state and hopeless human condition before God’s righteous expectations of us. The ‘gospel’ is God’s freeing word of unequivocal love and unconditional affirmation of us in the cross of Christ. We always feel like we’ve learned something and feel closer to God after his sermons.

Pastor John, who was ordained in June 1986, is a Maryland native who grew up on a dairy farm near Reisterstown in Baltimore County. He graduated from the University of Maryland College Park in 1972 (Go Terps) and has graduate degrees from McDaniel College in Counseling, Gettysburg Seminary in Theology and Philadelphia Lutheran Seminary in Ministry. His wife, Debbie, teaches family studies at Loch Raven High School. They have three grown children; Sam, Jake and Eliza. Pastor John lived five years in Africa serving in the US Peace Corps and doing mission work—so he eats almost anything.
